Chicago, Illinois, July 30, 2020 – Beam Suntory, a leading global premium spirits company, today reported results for the first half of 2020.
Net sales declined 3% for the January-June period, reflecting the adverse impact of the global pandemic. Sales declined 3% in the United States, as significantly lower sales to restaurants and bars more than offset increases in off-premise outlets. Sales were lower at a double-digit rate in markets most severely impacted by the pandemic, including Spain, India and the Global Travel Retail channel. Sales grew at a low-single-digit rate in Japan, Germany, the U.K. and Russia, and increased at a double-digit rate in Canada.
Sales for the company’s brands reflected pandemic-related trends in consumer behavior, including the strong appeal of familiar brands, continued premiumization, and convenient formats. As a result, sales for Jim Beam grew at a low-single-digit rate; small batch bourbons Basil Hayden’s and Knob Creek, as well as Toki Japanese whisky, Roku gin and Haku vodka, grew at double-digit rates; and Japanese ready-to-drink products grew 20%. Sales for brands with greater reliance on restaurants, bars and travel retail were generally lower.
“While our sales were substantially below our expectations at the start of the year, the people of Beam Suntory rose to the challenge and fueled stronger momentum than we expected at the onset of the pandemic,” said Albert Baladi, president & CEO of Beam Suntory. “Our teams demonstrated impressive agility to pivot in many important ways – to redirect resources to fast growing channels such as off-premise and eCommerce, to meet consumers in the new ‘home premise,’ and to support restaurants and bars through new revenue streams like cocktails to go. I’m especially proud how our teams urgently repurposed facilities to produce enough sanitizer solution to clean more than 50 million pairs of hands, developed programs to support hard-hit hospitality industry workers, leaned into the important issue of social justice, and continued momentum behind our environmental sustainability initiatives. Beam Suntory’s vision is Growing for Good, and the first half clearly demonstrated our company’s values-based, purpose-driven approach that has benefited our communities, the cause of public health and the environment.”
Underscoring the strength of the company’s culture, Beam Suntory was recently recognized as a Great Place to Work in the United States, Australia, Germany and Mexico.
“Looking ahead, the ongoing pandemic presents continued uncertainty across global markets, and we must still manage the adverse impact of retaliatory tariffs. Even so, we’re determined to boost strategic investment to compete intensively in the current environment and emerge from the crisis in the strongest possible position.”
Beam Suntory’s parent company, Suntory Holdings, will report its results for the first half of 2020 on August 6th.
Update on Beam Suntory Growing for Good initiatives
Sanitizer: The company’s facilities in Kentucky, Japan, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Mexico produced finished hand sanitizer or alcohol for sanitizer products to help hospital systems and first responders fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Production of sanitizer to date has been sufficient to clean more than 50 million pairs of hands.
Hospitality industry: The company provided more than $2 million in support to restaurant and bar workers and their families across numerous markets. Initiatives included Maker’s Mark’s partnership with the LEE Initiative Restaurant Workers Relief Program, which donated approximately 400,000 meals to restaurant workers in more than 20 US cities, the company’s Shift-Meals To-Go program, which arranged more than 15,000 free meals for US hospitality workers and their families, the First Shift Meals program to support Canadian hospitality workers, and a partnership with the National Restaurant Association of India to provide relief to thousands of restaurant staff and their families.

6 August 2020, Islay, UK - Bowmore Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin have unveiled their first collaborative creation; Black Bowmore DB5 1964. A striking concept which brings together an iconic whisky and a legendary car in a bottle of equal parts, featuring exceptional single malt and a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.
With only 25 bottles for sale, this exceptionally rare Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a celebration of time; a definitive moment in history for both Bowmore and Aston Martin. It is also a celebration of shared values and passions; showcasing great innovation and invention.
A beautifully inspiring masterpiece; this unique, handcrafted vessel houses an equally exceptional single malt, Black Bowmore. Inspired by the past, but truly breath-taking in today’s world. The significance of 1964 is paramount. This represents a truly defining era of evolution for both Bowmore and Aston Martin.
For Bowmore, 1964 is arguably one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival of a new boiler saw the distillery enter the modern age of distilling as coal fires made way for steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore; a sublimely rich and decadent single malt, reflected in awe-inspiring deep darkness.
First distilled on 5 November 1964, over the years Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most sought-after single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this exquisite single malt. Since 1993, only around six thousand bottles of Black Bowmore have been made available, thus adding to the desirability of this iconic whisky.
David Turner, Distillery Manager at Bowmore commented “1964 represents a significant date in the modern history of the distillery. Not only a key moment in how we distilled our spirit, but perhaps even more significant as this very spirit went onto create Black Bowmore. These defining moments are fundamental to the history of Bowmore. This collaboration with Aston Martin has allowed us to once again showcase this iconic single malt in the most incredible way.”
For Aston Martin, this was the era of their most iconic car. Launched in 1963 to considerable acclaim, the Aston Martin DB5 is now widely regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’, not least by virtue of its links to the world’s most celebrated secret agent in 1964.
On its debut the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its immediate predecessor, the DB4 Series 5, not least by virtue of an increase in engine capacity to 4.0-litres. This of course made the DB5 that much more of a sporting saloon which, combined with its exceptional styling, helped it to become one of the most desirable and admired sports cars of its generation. Sir David Brown, the then owner of Aston Martin Lagonda and the man who gave his initials to the ‘DB’ lineage, said of the car: “I believe it is the essential character of the DB5, and its ability to perform perfectly in all conditions, that makes this car so intensely satisfying to own.” It is this relentless pursuit of power with purpose that still helps to define the appeal of Aston Martin today.
Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivalled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavours of this world-renowned single malt.”
In keeping with a commitment to true craftsmanship, the Black Bowmore DB5 bottle itself is handcrafted by Glasstorm, a bespoke contemporary glass studio, based in North East Scotland. With over 50 years of glass design, sculpting and creative expertise, each bottle took up to one week to be complete, reflecting the continued thread of attention to detail and skill which defines this collaboration.
Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is presented in a handmade presentation box; itself a work of art. Inspired by the distillery’s coastal home, the deep blue colour and wave embossing evoke a true sense of place. Created from the finest string-grain calfskin, featuring a custom solid brass latch and hinges, plated with nickel, reflective of the DB5.
The partners are set to unveil a series of collaborative projects and products over the coming months and years, ranging from exceptional experiences to design-led product initiatives with the goal of offering fans of the brands, across a broad spectrum, the opportunities to connect with the partnership.
As world class luxury brands Bowmore and Aston Martin urge consumers never to drink and drive. Drink Smart messaging will be integrated into all brand activations around the partnership; while the dedicated Drink Smart platform ensures communication with legal-purchase age adults about making informed, responsible choices.

Lagonda was founded in 1899 and Aston Martin in 1913. The two brands came together in 1947 when both were purchased by the late Sir David Brown.
About Bowmore:
Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the 'Islands' in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.
Time is savoured at Bowmore and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.
Bowmore Distillery's close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault's sea-facing wall.
They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling. It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore is “Time, Savoured” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

Loretto, Ky. (August 18, 2020) – Maker’s Mark today announced the launch of the Maker’s Mark 2020 Limited Release, the second nationally available limited release bourbon in its Wood Finishing Series. Following the success of last year’s award-winning Stave Profile RC6 release, which amplified fruit flavors inspired by the proprietary Maker’s Mark yeast strain, this year’s release showcases the distillery’s pursuit of enhanced vanilla and caramel notes that have defined its classic expression for more than fifty years.
The Maker’s Mark 2020 Limited Release joins the Wood Finishing Series as the distillery celebrates the 10th anniversary of Maker’s Mark 46, the first innovation utilizing its pioneering stave finishing technique to draw out and highlight distinctive characteristics inherent to Maker’s Mark Bourbon.
“Since the introduction of Maker’s Mark 46, wood staves have become our tool of choice for unlocking and amplifying natural flavors already present in our classic Maker’s Mark – always purposefully and with a specific taste vision in mind,” says Jane Bowie, Director of Innovation at Maker’s Mark. “Where Maker’s Mark 46 was about creating a ‘bolder’ Maker’s, and the 2019 release was all about boosting the notes of baking spice and fruit, our 2020 Limited Release has been a quest to amp up those rich vanilla and buttery-caramel flavors that typically stem from our unique approach to seasoning our barrel wood outside for a full year.”
This year’s limited offering differs from its 2019 predecessor by utilizing two stave styles – one drawing on vanilla, the other on caramel – that when married together yield a rich Maker’s Mark reminiscent of butter pecan. The multi-stave approach was the result of more than twelve months of experimentation with Maker’s Mark barrel producer Independent Stave Company. The first stave in the 2020 Limited Release, SE4, is made from Virgin French Oak, convection cooked at medium heat with a short toast period and responsible for much of the caramel flavor. The second stave, PR5, is made from Virgin American Oak and convection cooked at low heat very slowly over time to bring out vanilla.
Like existing Wood Finishing Series offerings Maker’s Mark 46 and Maker’s Mark Private Selection, the 2020 Limited Release was purposefully crafted by finishing fully-matured, cask strength Maker’s Mark in secondary barrels containing the proprietary wood staves. The barrels were then rested in the Maker’s Mark limestone bourbon cellar where the cask strength bourbon interacts with the staves, before being mingled together to develop the expression’s unique flavor.
Bottled at 110.8 proof, each 750mL bottle of the Maker’s Mark 2020 Limited Release will retail for a suggested $59.99 and will be available nationwide beginning in September, while supplies last.
1Maker’s Mark 2019 Limited Release: Stave Profile RC6 was awarded a Double Gold Medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
About Maker's Mark® Bourbon
In 1953, in Loretto, Kentucky, Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency, and finally, aged each barrel to taste. Bill Samuels, Sr., transformed bourbon from a "commodity" into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker's Mark® continues to make its bourbon the same way. In recent years, Maker's Mark has introduced thoughtful, super-premium innovations to its portfolio including Maker’s Mark 46™ Maker's Mark® Cask Strength, and Maker's Mark Private Select®, the brand's first-ever custom barrel program. In 1980, the Maker's Mark distillery became the first distillery in America to be designated a National Historic Landmark and has also been decreed as the "world's oldest operating bourbon whiskey distillery" by Guinness World Records. It remains one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's most popular tourist destinations, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. For more information, visit makersmark.com.
