Net sales rose 11% globally on strong consumer demand for brands including Maker’s Mark®, Basil Hayden®, Courvoisier®, Hibiki, Laphroaig®, Roku and On The Rocks™
CHICAGO, February 18, 2022 – Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, reported full-year 2021 results, with sales up 11% globally. These results also demonstrated strong growth versus the pre-pandemic year of 2019, with sales also up 11% over the past two years.
The company’s 2021 results were led by sustained strength in off-premise sales, and very strong performance in markets where bars and restaurants reopened faster than expected. Markets including Germany, Russia, Spain, emerging Asia and Global Travel Retail all grew at double-digit rates, as did China and India, key markets for Beam Suntory’s future growth ambitions. Sales in the U.S. grew high-single digits, bolstered by robust demand for premium brands. Sales in Japan, up mid-single-digits, benefited from strong demand for convenient ready-to-drink beverages like -196˚, but were impacted by extended on-premise restrictions.
By brand, results underscore the strength of consumer interest in premium brands. Sales grew double digits for brands including Maker’s Mark®, Basil Hayden®, Knob Creek®, Booker’s® and Legent™ bourbons, Laphroaig®, Bowmore® and Auchentoshan® scotches, Hibiki®, Hakushu® and Toki™ Japanese whiskies, Sipsmith® and Suntory® Roku gins, and El Tesoro™ and Hornitos® tequilas, while On the Rocks™ (acquired in 2020) continued to show exceptional growth. Beam Suntory’s flagship Jim Beam® also demonstrated solid growth despite glass supply constraints affecting certain bottle sizes.
“We’re immensely proud of the results our business has been able to deliver in the face of historical challenges related to the pandemic, including on-premise closures and supply chain constraints,” said Albert Baladi, president & CEO of Beam Suntory. “Our results underscore the strength of our premiumization strategy that relies on exceptional quality, superior storytelling, and executional excellence across consumer touchpoints.”
“Our confidence in the future is reinforced by the strategic moves we’re making, with accelerated investment in our business -- including capacity, capabilities and our sustainability agenda -- the 2021 acquisition of our route to market in Spain, and our upcoming joint innovations with Boston Beer. The people of Beam Suntory look forward to delivering another year of outstanding performance in 2022.”

“A lifetime goal of mine is to write a song that I'll hear performed by an artist on the radio. I’ve been writing songs for about 15 years. I haven't been published yet, and there was a point in my life where I got so frustrated that I began to feel like maybe I was wasting my time. But songwriting is something I love because it’s an expression of myself, and simply gives me joy. I love music and enjoy the challenge of trying to distill an idea into something that's compelling. I really like the creative process. Sometimes, my work is like an artistic endeavor where I start something on a piece of paper and then rewrite it until it’s just right, sort of like songwriting. I think there's this assumption that a creative person just plucks an idea out of thin air and then they just plop it onto a piece of paper, and it's done. Whereas I think of it as a process, where you mull an idea in your head, then write it and rewrite it. Like songwriting, work is a journey of ideas, feedback, and revisions, especially when collaborating with a team.
When I worked on Courvoisier, within two years we turned the brand around to gain share in Canada. It wasn't like I had one idea, wrote it down, and done. It was a journey of collaborating with colleagues and agency partners, trying things out, and if something didn't work - going back and refining it. Working through that was like coming up with a song, then coming up with a full-fledged band where everybody was doing their part to activate and build visibility of Courvoisier. Working at Beam Suntory allows for a lot of teamwork and collaboration. People sometimes think of it as an army or sports team, but I think of my team as a band. When working on a project, we’re all playing together off the same song sheet and everybody has a different role within the band, working towards creating something amazing.”

About Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
In 1953, in Loretto, Ky., Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He
decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and
sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste. Bill
Samuels, Sr., transformed bourbon from a "commodity" into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker's
Mark continues to make its bourbon the same way. That time-tested approach seems to still be working just
fine 60+ years later, as Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon was awarded a Double Gold medal at the
esteemed San Francisco Spirits Competition in 2021. In recent years, Maker's Mark has introduced thoughtful,
super-premium innovations to its portfolio, including Maker's Mark 46, Maker's Mark Cask Strength and
Maker's Mark Private Selection, the brand's first-ever custom barrel program. For more information,

One-off Bowmore® whisky art piece sells for record £400,000 ($532,340)
An exceptionally rare, one-off 51 Year Old single malt, Bowmore® Onyx has been sold at the inaugural Distillers One of One auction for a record price of £400,000/$532,340* in Edinburgh today, cementing the Islay distillery’s commitment to charitable giving and Bowmore’s desirability in the secondary market.
A truly striking encapsulation of time, with over half a century of craftsmanship, quality and character embedded in its creation and story, Bowmore® Onyx is a hand blown black glass vessel, containing 1.4litres of ultra-rare whisky. Inspired by the incredible terroir of our island home, specifically the distinctive black rock, or bogha mor, from which it is believed the name Bowmore is derived, this one-off rare masterpiece was highly sought after with bidders keen to add it to their collection.
Matured in an American Oak refill barrel, which was filled on 17th February 1970, this single malt was the first 51 Year Old ever released by the distillery and the auction was the only opportunity for bid for this Bowmore® Onyx. Nurtured in the legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults, this whisky spent its long life resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault's sea-facing wall, slowly evolving its distinctive character.
This single malt is very much defined and shaped by over 50 years in oak, however the influence of Islay remains a constant. Burnished gold in colour, the exquisite fresh and fruity aromas thrill the nose with the sweetness of stewed white flesh peaches balanced with the punchy notes of menthol and eucalyptus. Then signature peat smoke sneaks in alongside woody notes of polished cedarwood and burnt caramel. The tantalising taste of sweet orchard fruit and spices excite the palate as tobacco, earthy walnuts and pecan nuts lead to a mouth warming, long lasting finish.
The creation of the one-off glass structure celebrates Islay, but more than that, it is itself a masterpiece in glass design being the first structure of this size and style to ever house Bowmore. Hand blown using highly skilled and creative techniques from the expert team at Glasstorm, who previously crafted the exclusive Bowmore® 1957 which sold at Sotheby’s for £363,000, and the stunning Black Bowmore DB5 1964, this beautiful art piece takes direct inspiration from the striking rock formations of Islay.
Commenting on the project, Francois Bazini, Managing Director – Scotch, Gin & Irish at Beam Suntory said, “This is another incredible milestone in the evolution of Bowmore, and cements its position has a hugely creative, desirable and committed brand. But vitally be part of this auction and achieve this record price for Onyx means we can continue in our philanthropic endeavours to the benefit of Scotland’s young people. This is a great day for Bowmore, and also for the establishment of a new legacy.”
Proceeds from The Distillers One of One auction will benefit The Youth Action Fund, which has been created by The Distillers’ Charity focusing on supporting disadvantaged young people in Scotland, transforming their life chances and empowering them to create positive change in their lives and communities. Working with charity partners who offer education and training programmes, the fund will provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, discover their values and be work-ready.
Earlier this year, the Islay distillery unveiled the Bowmore Legacy project to support employability, training and housing needs of Bowmore’s young people, enabling a range of vital outcomes from affordable and supported housing to key employment skills for young people with barriers to employment. The key goal of the Bowmore Legacy is to futureproof the island’s distilling industry for tomorrow by investing in young people’s needs today.
*Final price includes buyer’s premium of 25% of hammer price (£320,000/$425,870)

ABOUT BOWMORE®
For over 240 years, the Bowmore Distillery has been capturing the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. Shaped by centuries of skill and tradition, Bowmore’s single malt harnesses the power of this time in every single drop, defined by the past and savoured in the present.
Time is defining at Bowmore® and we tirelessly harness the power of time to shape our whiskies. Our distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our fruity and smoky single malts. Today, we are amongst one of a few distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.
Bowmore® Distillery's proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit and gives a hint of sea air to the character. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault's sea-facing wall.
Matured in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry, or claret, over time developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling. It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people, and tradition that makes Bowmore the exceptional single malt it is today.
Time is marked on each and every bottle of Bowmore, proudly and boldly as a marker of where and when each one’s journey began. This is our story of time. This is Bowmore; the Art of Time since 1779.

About The Distillers’ One of One
Launched in 2021, the Distillers’ One of One is a biennial series of auctions of Scottish whisky in aid of disadvantaged young people in Scotland. Led by The Distiller’s Charity, the philanthropic arm of The Worshipful Company of Distillers, and in partnership with Sotheby’s, the Scotch Whisky industry has gathered together to support philanthropy. Participating distilleries are donating ultra-rare whisky and experiences for sale at auction aiming to raise in excess of £1 million during the initial 3 December 2021 auction.
In order to help transform the life chances of young people in Scotland post pandemic, The Distillers’ Charity has created the Youth Action Fund. The proceeds from the Distillers’ One of One auction will be disbursed from the fund to a number of charities that focus on empowering Scotland’s young adults to create positive change in their lives and communities. Sotheby’s will also donate a portion of their buyer’s premium from the auction to The Distillers’ Charity.
The donation of a one-off Bowmore Onyx 51 Year Old and a unique pair of Glen Garioch casks will support Beam Suntory’s Proof Positive philanthropic commitments
17 November 2021 – Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, is proud to contribute two exceptional lots to the upcoming Distillers ‘One of One’ auction, which will be held on December 3rd in Edinburgh. The auction, led by The Distiller’s Charity, the philanthropic arm of The Worshipful Company of Distillers, in partnership with Sotheby’s, will benefit disadvantaged young adults in Scotland. Led by two of its most historic, renowned Scotch whisky houses, Bowmore and Glen Garioch, Beam Suntory’s contributions to the auction further reinforce its Growing for Good vision and Proof Positive commitments.
Following the launch of the Bowmore Legacy project earlier this year, which supports the employability, training and housing needs of Bowmore’s young people, Bowmore is expanding on this commitment with its donation of an exceptionally rare, one-of-a-kind Bowmore Onyx 51 Year Old single malt. Matured in an American Oak refill barrel, which was filled on 17th February 1970, this rare creation is the first 51 Year Old ever released by the distillery and the auction provides the only opportunity to own this handcrafted, one-off masterpiece, along with a 100ml tasting sample.
Bowmore Onyx is the encapsulation of time, with over half a century of craftsmanship, quality and character embedded in its creation and story. Presented in a striking, hand blown black glass vessel, containing 1.4 litres of ultra-rare whisky, the bottle’s one-of-a-kind glass structure celebrates Islay and is a masterpiece in glass design, being the first structure of this size and style to ever house Bowmore. Hand blown by the expert team at Glasstorm, who previously crafted the exclusive Bowmore 1957 which sold at Sotheby’s for £363,000, and the stunning Black Bowmore DB5 1964, this beautiful art piece takes direct inspiration from the striking rock formations of Islay.
In addition, Glen Garioch will be contributing two rare casks, which will be presented together in a bespoke cradle crafted by local cabinetmaker, Lethenty cabinetmakers, and accompanied by a copper Vallinch designed by Forsyths. This unique pairing will be a one-of-a kind offering and is a celebration of the 2021 restoration of the Glen Garioch distillery. Earlier this year, Glen Garioch announced a £6 million investment to return its historic distillery to traditional production processes, with the reintroduction of floor maltings and direct-fired distillation.
The first cask, a Glen Garioch 1990 cask, is a first fill American Oak, ex-Bourbon Hogshead cask, containing the equivalent of approximately 20 9-litre cases of the highest quality single malt. In July of 1990, when this barrel was filled, Glen Garioch still had floor maltings and direct-fired stills, the style was lightly peated and still used brewer’s yeast, all elements that the distillery is planning to return to by the end of this year.
The second Glen Garioch casks is a new fill, and will be one of the first casks produced by the distillery following the restoration of its traditional floor maltings and direct-fired stills. Like its 1990 counterpart, this new barrel is also a first fill American Oak, ex-Bourbon Hogsheads cask. Together, the two casks tell the story of how the past is inspiring Glen Garioch as it opens the next chapter in its future.
Commenting on both contributions, Francois Bazini, Managing Director – Scotch, Gin & Irish at Beam Suntory said, “We are so proud that both Bowmore and Glen Garioch are making these one-of-a-kind contributions to this exceptional charitable auction. Inspired by the philanthropic commitments laid out in Beam Suntory’s Proof Positive sustainability strategy, Bowmore and Glen Garioch are both deeply committed to giving back to the communities that they have called home for more than 220 years. We are delighted to be able to showcase the craftsmanship of our legendary Scotch whiskies and share these singular offerings in support of such an important cause.”
David Turner, Bowmore Distillery Manager, commented, “For the first time, we are releasing a 51 Year Old Bowmore, making this one-off extremely rare and precious. To make this happen, we’ve taken a single portion of stock taken from a cask that has been carefully watched over by the distillery team and nurtured in the legendary No.1 Vaults. There is no doubt this one of a kind will be hugely desired by those who love our incredible single malt.”
Kwanele Mdluli, Glen Garioch Distillery Manager, commented, “This is an incredibly important moment in the history of the Glen Garioch distillery – a true turning point as we return to our traditional production processes for the first time in 25 years. We are so pleased to be able to capture this moment with this completely bespoke pairing of two casks – one representing our past, the other representing our future, coming full circle – all in support of Scotland’s next generation.”
Proceeds from The Distillers One of One auction will benefit The Youth Action Fund, which has been created by The Distillers’ Charity focusing on supporting disadvantaged young people in Scotland, transforming their life chances and empowering them to create positive change in their lives and communities. Working with charity partners who offer education and vocational training programmes, including distillation training, the fund will provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, discover their values and be work-ready.

• New limited-edition single malt whisky combines the mastery of Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer and Bowmore’s Master Whisky Blender
• Each Master’s unique understanding of proportionality has created a whisky with exquisite depth and balance.
• For the first time, Bowmore has adopted the Golden Ratio principle to create a new whisky
• Bowmore Masters’ Selection is available from November 2021
8 November 2021, Islay, UK: A shared commitment to heritage, craftsmanship and innovation unites the worlds of whisky making and automotive design with the creation of Bowmore® Masters’ Selection; the first single malt whisky to be made by Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky in collaboration with Aston Martin.
Imagined and defined by two Masters; Bowmore Master Whisky Blender Ron Welsh and Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, Bowmore Masters’ Selection bridges two distinct worlds in a powerful, yet inspiring way. At its heart is a mutual trust and respect for one other’s worlds and a passion to discover and learn from each other. Each Master imparts their own creativity and character, but also makes an indelible mark, like leaving their own unique fingerprint, on every single creation
Marek Reichman, has often spoken about the concept of the ‘Golden Ratio’ – the mathematical ratio found in nature that creates aesthetically pleasing compositions -, which sits at the heart of the design of every Aston Martin. Absolute beauty can be created when you achieve a perfect relationship between each proportion of the car.
Reichman explains: “Proportionality defines every precise detail of designing an Aston Martin. We are constantly striving to achieve the Golden Ratio; the optimal of proportions. And it is this force which guides the creation of absolute beauty. To achieve this, we must combine our skill, passion and experience. Coming together with Ron just brings a whole new perspective on this and is hugely inspiring and enlightening. This whisky perfectly and harmoniously brings us together to create a beautiful, yet powerful equilibrium.”
For Bowmore, proportions define character and shape flavour combinations; from cask selection and age to blending. Ron Welsh, Master Blender, Bowmore, explains, “For the first time with this whisky, we have adopted the Golden Ratio to inspire each of the elements bringing their own unique flavours and selecting the optimal casks to forge the desired character, taking inspiration from Marek and his team. What seems totally contrasting is, in fact, perfectly balanced and proportionate. Working with Marek has given me a new lens from which to explore whisky making. This whisky serves as a celebration of our unified knowledge and experience; our shared passions, values and ideas.”
Taking inspiration from an engineered approach, this whisky incorporates the divine proportion of 61.8% formed from a base of 21 year old Bowmore matured in first fill Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks. The remaining parts are made up of exact ratios of each other, in line with the Golden Ratio theory, and include exceptionally aged Bowmore matured for over 35 years.
For this single malt, a powerful and complex yet sweet warming, the creators seems, on the face, to have created absolute contrast but in reality, they have captured perfect balance and proportion. With a clear nod to Aston Martin in the very creation of this Bowmore whisky, it exudes a sophistication and complexity which is truly considered yet promises a thrilling taste experience.
Powerful yet elegant; from sweet to spice; sherry to coffee; honey to pepper – the perfect proportions to achieve absolute depth and balance.
Bowmore Masters’ Selection is available in key global markets including UK, Germany, Canada, USA and China at an RSP of US$300 (ex VAT/duty) from November onwards.

About Bowmore®
Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest distillery on Islay. Our maturation warehouse is the oldest in the world and our handcrafted single malt whisky is defined by time and inspired by its home place.
Matured in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, over time developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling. It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that makes Bowmore the exceptional single malt it is today.
Time is marked on each and every bottle of Bowmore, proudly and boldly as a marker of where and when each one’s journey began. This is our story of time. This is Bowmore; the Art of Time since 1779.

25 October 2021 - Suntory Holdings and Beam Suntory are jointly launching a new Peatland Water Sanctuary™ initiative, a large-scale series of peatland restoration and conservation and watershed conservation projects in Scotland. These projects represent a significant expansion of Suntory and Beam Suntory’s already pioneering leadership in watershed protection, following their establishment of significant Natural Water Sanctuaries in both Japan and the US. The companies plan to invest more than $4 million in the restoration and conservation of 1,300 hectares of peatlands by 2030, enough to produce the same amount of peat that Beam Suntory harvests every year in making its Scotch whiskies on an ongoing basis. Once restored and conserved, peatland naturally accumulates by 1mm per year, and that 1mm growth spread across 1,300 hectares will equate to Beam Suntory’s annual use. Suntory and Beam Suntory will also undertake new watershed conservation projects at various locations in Scotland. The first Peatland Water Sanctuary™ project is due to begin near the Ardmore distillery in November 2021, with subsequent projects across other sites in Scotland to follow in the coming years.
“The Peatland Water Sanctuary™ initiative is inspired by Suntory’s Mizu to Ikiru (“Living with Water”) promise, which is underpinned by our mission to create harmony with people and nature. We believe that water flowing through peatlands is suited for whisky production and by restoring and conserving peatlands we hope to not only contribute to preserving whisky production as an indispensable part of Scotland’s culture, but also fulfil our responsibility as a company that relies on the blessings of nature and water,” said Tak Niinami, CEO of Suntory Holdings.
Initial works to restore and conserve peatland near the Ardmore distillery are due to commence in November 2021. In the first phase, nearly 15 hectares of peatland in the Ardmore Knockandy Hill north side slope will be restored, with more to follow in 2022. Restoration will also potentially include Malsach Burn Valley as early as 2022. This initial restoration project at Ardmore will be undertaken in partnership with the James Hutton Institute, who are assisting with the research, planning, and execution of the restoration, and Forestry and Land Scotland, which owns the land.
The Ardmore project will be the first in a long-term programme of peatland restoration and conservation and watershed conservation projects which Suntory and Beam Suntory will undertake across Scotland. These projects are expected to launch before 2030. Initial assessments for new projects are already underway on Islay, where Beam Suntory’s Bowmore and Laphroaig distilleries are located, and surveys on potential watershed activities near Beam Suntory’s Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch distilleries are also being planned. Detail on these projects will be announced in due course.
Beyond this 2030 ambition, the long-term aim of the Peatland Water Sanctuary™ initiative is for Suntory and Beam Suntory to have restored sufficient peatlands by 2040 to equate to twice the volume of peat that Beam Suntory harvests to make its Scotch whiskies. Although Scotch whisky production as a whole accounts for less than 1% of Scotland’s peat use, and Beam Suntory’s Scotch production accounts for part of that 1%, both companies share the industry’s commitment to ensuring their use of peat is sustainable and to making a positive impact on Scotland’s environment more broadly.
The Peatland Water Sanctuary™ initiative aligns with the Suntory Group Sustainability Vision and Beam Suntory’s ambitious Proof Positive sustainability strategy, as well as the Scotch Whisky Association’s environmental commitments. In addition to the long-term positive impact of peatland and watershed restoration and conservation on water retention and quality, the work will also support carbon sequestration and biodiversity in the local area, helping to maintain and protect the important role of peatland ecosystems in Scotland’s natural environment.
David Hunter, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Beam Suntory commented: “As part of our Proof Positive sustainability strategy, we believe it’s our responsibility to make a positive impact on the environment in which we operate, which is why we are committing to restoring and conserving as much peat as we harvest by 2030, as well as conserving crucial watersheds across Scotland. By protecting peatlands and preserving local watersheds, we will also help to enhance and ensure the production of the highest quality whisky in Scotland for future generations.”
Professor Colin Campbell, Chief Executive of the James Hutton Institute, said: “We are pleased to be working alongside Suntory, Beam Suntory and Forestry and Land Scotland on this vital initiative to help restore and protect one of Scotland’s most iconic habitats. Healthy peatlands help build resilience into our water supplies and restoring them allows nature to recover from the impact of climate change and promotes long-term carbon sequestration.
“These natural assets are essential for sustaining one of Scotland’s most important industries, and it is truly a pleasure to work with partners who have such a well-developed philosophy around the protection of our natural environment.”
Simon Hodgson, Forestry and Land Scotland Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased to be working with Suntory, Beam Suntory and the James Hutton Institute on such a forward-looking conservation programme. It is a great example of how business and land management organisations can work together and is a welcome addition to our growing suite of corporate partnerships.”
