CHICAGO, March 22, 2019 – Beam Suntory, a world leader in premium spirits, has deepened ties with a leading conservation and education organization neighboring its largest distillery in Kentucky, and forged a new relationship with a river protection organization near its global headquarters in Chicago.
The maker of Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark bourbon, Courvoisier cognac and Hibiki Japanese whisky announced these developments in recognition of World Water Day.
“Water is at the center of nearly every product we create,” Beam Suntory Chairman & CEO Matt Shattock said. “We are committed to preserving and protecting this precious natural resource, and the surrounding environment, for future use in our products, and for the communities where we live and work.”
Inspired by parent company Suntory Holdings’ leadership in this area, Beam Suntory has established Natural Water Sanctuaries at its Maker’s Mark distillery, and near its Jim Beam distillery. The Jim Beam Natural Water Sanctuary is an Alliance with Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, the largest privately held contiguous forest block in the Eastern United States dedicated to conservation and education.
Beam Suntory and Bernheim recently extended their partnership to a five-year agreement, with the goal of protecting water quality, restoring wildlife habitats, and reintroducing native plants and trees on Bernheim grounds immediately adjacent to the Jim Beam distillery. They will also work to enhance environmental education in the community, within Beam Suntory, and at visitor experiences at both locations.
To celebrate World Water Day, the Jim Beam American Stillhouse team is teaming up with Bernheim representatives to share the importance of protecting water and the environment with distillery visitors. Guests will receive a reusable water bottle, Jim Beam will make a donation to further environmental education, and legal-drinking-age guests can enjoy specially themed cocktails.
Beam Suntory is also forging a partnership with the Friends of the Chicago River, a 40-year-old organization working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people, plants and animals. The partnership is focused on preserving and protecting the local waterway, and will include regular employee volunteer commitments.
Beam Suntory has eliminated the use of plastic straws at its global headquarters, and has committed to eliminate single-use plastics for food and beverages by the end of 2019. Within the last year, Beam Suntory employees have volunteered to clear waterways in Singapore, Taiwan, California and Chicago, and plant trees in Japan, Madrid, New York and Kentucky.

Oct 10 2017 - Great bourbon starts with great water. Kentucky bourbon gets its wonderful taste, in part, from the local water, which has been filtered naturally through limestone. Maker’s Mark has established a 33-acre Natural Water Sanctuary on its distillery grounds to preserve the land that filters the water, and to protect it as the source of our water now and in the future.
Efforts underway at the Maker’s Mark Natural Water Sanctuary will preserve and protect our water supply by developing and maintaining healthy forests. Healthy forests provide a “natural filter” to help purify, regenerate and replenish our water supply. A diversity in plant species slows water down by creating vertical layers - from the top of the trees, through shrubs, and down to the ground cover. This promotes better filtration, inhibits runoff and conditions the soil. The water that reaches the lake at the Maker’s Mark plant will be in better condition, and part of a healthier environment. Higher quality vegetation also improves wildlife habitats.
Improvements to the Natural Water Sanctuary included thinning cedars trees, which create a dense canopy and reduce species diversity. American White Oak along with a mixture of native trees and shrubs were planted across the entire area and nesting boxes were placed throughout the Natural Water Sanctuary and the shores of Bourbon Lake. As a sign of the long-term commitment to this program, Maker’s Mark recently hired a naturalist to oversee the Natural Water Sanctuary and the other diverse habitats that comprise Star Hill Farm.
Beam Suntory has also partnered with the University of Kentucky and the Suntory Institute for Water Science to develop watershed balance at its Kentucky distilleries, and ongoing monitoring of preservation and protection activities. Beam Suntory’s Natural Water Sanctuary Program is inspired by Suntory’s unwavering dedication to water quality and sustainability, and the company looks forward to expanding these programs and engaging the community in protecting the source of local limestone water for our bourbon distillation and the health of our community for generations to come.
Kentucky Distillers’ Association honors Beam Suntory veteran for work to build the small batch category, broaden bourbon’s appeal, and develop a bourbon education platform.

NEW YORK, March 8, 2019 – Today, Beam Suntory proudly announces the launch of Legent™, a unique bourbon that brings together the best of the East and West in a way no other whiskey producer can. A first-of-its-kind, Legent (pronounced ‘lee-jent’) is a unique innovation that starts as a Kentucky Straight Bourbon with the Beam classic family recipe and is aged in wine and sherry casks before being blended with more Kentucky Straight Bourbon, resulting in a perfectly balanced yet complex and layered whiskey that is truly extraordinary.
At its heart, Legent celebrates mastery and collaboration. The super-premium bourbon is expertly distilled by Fred Noe, seventh-generation Master Distiller of Jim Beam, bourbon’s pioneering family, and artfully blended by Shinji Fukuyo, fifth-ever Chief Blender of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whisky.
“Legent is the perfect articulation of the amazing things that can be achieved when two great cultures come together as one, sharing a unified vision to bring true innovation and best-in-class spirits to the world,”said Takeshi Niinami, Chief Executive Officer of Suntory Holdings.
This bourbon honors Fred and the Beam family’s proud traditions while showcasing Shinji’s award-winning blending capabilities. Quite simply, it’s a bourbon no one else could create.
From grain to bottle, Legent is made using the finest ingredients and materials. Starting with high-quality grain, calcium-rich limestone water and newly charred white oak, the extra-aged Kentucky Straight Bourbon is then aged in hand-selected wine and sherry casks and rested over the warm Kentucky summer pulling spice and fruity undertones from the wine-soaked barrels. The liquid is then meticulously blended to achieve a bourbon like no other resulting in a bold spirit that is rich on the nose yet approachable and well-balanced on the palate with a bright, smooth and unexpectedly long finish.
“Legent is really something special. As a bourbon distiller, I enjoy breaking rules and creating new traditions,” noted Fred Noe, seventh generation Beam Family Master Distiller. “It was a real honor collaborating with Shinji on what I think is different from anything out there in the bourbon world.”
“I have always been fascinated by the flavor profiles that can be achieved through innovation,” said Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender with the House of Suntory. “Using the historic bourbon recipe of Fred’s family as a solid foundation, I was able to explore new taste profiles and reach a final product that reimagines what the future of bourbon can be.”
Legent comes to market during a time of strong whiskey category growth in North America, and is a unique offering for both frequent bourbon drinkers and discerning sippers looking to try something new. The highly versatile bourbon is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a classic or new-age bourbon cocktail. Legent is available in 750mL (47% abv / 94 proof) in select markets throughout the United States for a suggested retail price of $34.99 USD.
